Our volunteer opportunities involve working directly with patients and caregivers. We have many opportunities as our patients census has grown. It is ideal for our volunteers to have a car.
Patient/Caregiver Support Volunteers
- Provide support and comfort by helping with the practical needs of patients and their caregivers.
- Length/time of visits: 1-4 hours weekdays or weekends, day or evening
- Frequency of visits: 2-4 times per month (unless otherwise arranged)
- Caregiver relief for caregivers to take a break (by leaving the home and/or resting)
- Companionship for patients (talking, reading, playing games, gentle touch, etc.)
- Hand massage (training is provided by Fairview Hospice)
- Light housekeeping (such as laundry, dishes, vacuuming, or dusting)
- Meal preparation (cooking, heating food, making sandwiches, etc.)
- Run errands (volunteers may not drive patients or caregivers in their cars; volunteers are reimbursed by patient or caregiver after running an errand)
- Special projects (writing holiday cards, sorting/organizing, etc.)
Check-In Call Volunteers
- Provide support and comfort through weekly phone calls to patients and caregivers to make sure they have everything they need before the weekend.
- Length/time of visits: 1-2 hours Thursday morning or early afternoon
- Frequency of visits: 1 time per week
- Make phone calls from the hospice office or your home using a script
- Document your calls in the patient’s electronic medical record using the computer
Massage Therapy Volunteers
- Provide relaxation and pain relief to patients through full or partial body massage. To enhance the care provided by Fairview massage therapy employees.
- Length/time of visits: Up to 1.5 hours weekdays or weekends, day or evening
- Frequency of visits: 1-2 times per month (unless otherwise arranged)
- You must be a trained, certified massage therapist and provide proof of training to Fairview Hospice.
Energy Work Volunteers
- Provide relaxation, calming, and pain relief to patients through energy work
- Length/time of visits: Up to 1.5 hours weekdays or weekends, day or evening
- Frequency of visits: 2-4 times per month (unless otherwise arranged)
- Volunteers may use reiki, healing touch, three heart balancing, quantum touch, or other forms of energy work.
- Volunteers may teach basic techniques to caregivers for use between visits.
- You must be trained in energy work and provide proof of training to Fairview Hospice.
- Provide companionship and support in the final 24-72 hours of life
- Length/time of visits: Up to 8 hours weekdays or weekends, day, evening, or overnight
- Frequency of visits: As needed
- Sit with patients who are alone
- Sit with patients who are agitated
- Stay with patients overnight so caregivers can rest
- Read, pray, hold hands, play music, etc. as requested
- Support caregivers who want assistance/guidance
- 11th hour volunteers must have had at least 6 months of experience in hospice care. This experience may be obtained by first volunteering as a Patient/Caregiver Support Volunteer.
- Provide end of life care that meets the unique needs of veterans and to recognize them for their service to our country.
- Length/time of visits: 1-4 hours weekdays or weekends, day or evening
- Frequency of visits: 2-4 times per month (unless otherwise arranged)
- Visit and share stories with veteran patients
- Present certificates honoring veterans for their service
- WHV is a national initiative developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs
- Must be a military veteran or active duty personnel
Do Re Mi Volunteers
- Provide enjoyment and relaxation through playing musical instruments and/or singing to patients/caregivers
- Length/time of visits: Up to 1 hour weekdays or weekends, day or evening
- Frequency of visits: 2-4 times per month (unless otherwise arranged)
- Do Re Mi volunteers are not necessarily professional musicians
- Do Re Mi volunteers do not provide music therapy*
